Background to Eating Disorder Recovery (OED) Courses
OED (Overcoming Eating Disorders) courses were set up by Helena Wilkinson and Nikki Cole over 20 years ago while they were running Kainos Trust, which merged in 2004 with Swansea City Mission. The unique approach and setting of Nicholaston House, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has resulted in many transformed lives; a number of those who have made a full recovery are now on team as volunteers.
Helena Wilkinson is a writer, trainer, and equine - facilitated psychotherapy practitioner (EFP). She is the author of 11 books, including the bestsellers, ‘Puppet on a String’, an autobiographical account of her fight with, and recovery from, anorexia, and ‘Beyond Chaotic Eating’, a way out of anorexia, bulimia and compulsive eating. Helena has worked with eating disorder sufferers for the last 30 years.
Why Attend an OED Course?
We often receive feedback that attending an OED course has brought about significant change in people’s lives not found elsewhere. We believe significant factors include:
- a homely non-clinical setting
- an accepting and safe environment
- an experienced team offering insight and personal input
- teaching which addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual
- testimonies to prove that full recovery is possible
- the use of creative tools to aid emotional expression
- involvement with animals including equine-assisted therapy
Course Information (2018-19)
Courses (limited to 8 delegates) are open to those with an eating disorder or chaotic eating patterns who want to address their issues. Prior to attending, a phone call will be arranged to ensure the course is suitable. Completing an OED ‘foundations’ course is a pre-requisite to applying for the ‘transitions’ course. To get the most out of the courses it is important to have a support structure in place at home and ideally be in therapy.
OED foundations - looks at the role of eating disorders, thought patterns, what stops change, keeping safe, identity and worth.
OED transitions - looks at unmet needs, the wounded heart, shame, stress, anxiety, loneliness, defence mechanisms and building blocks to emotional heath.
Each course will also address relationship with food, goal-setting and spiritual freedom.

‘God’s House’ is a detailed account of how Nicholaston House came into existence by the man who had the vision and was given instruction direct from God.
In 1990 God unmistakably led Sue and Derrick Hancock to Swansea to see a vision fulfilled which God had given them some years previously. The booklet (A5, 53 pages, colour) gives a brief factual account of what God did and is doing. It has been written for two reasons - to give glory to God and to show what very ordinary people can do when they step out in faith with God. 'All that we have accomplished, You have done for us' - Isaiah 26 v 12.
