There are resident staff at Nicholaston House forming a small intentional Christian community. This number is augmented by full-time, part-time and casual staff. The work is also supported by a host of volunteers who undertake a variety of tasks, from maintenance and gardening to counselling and prayer ministry. They offer invaluable help, but Nicholaston also provides them with a caring and therapeutic environment, giving meaning and purpose to their lives as well as a place of fun and fellowship. Many have retired but want to continue useful lives and benefit from the therapy of work.

Job Title: General Assistant

Responsible to: Housekeeper / Assistant Manager

Purpose of Job:

Our residential Christian community is small and the team have felt called by God to come and join us. All residential community members, regardless of their area of responsibility, are committed Christians and have a sense of calling to community and involve themselves in all aspects of the work of Nicholaston House. The residential community at Nicholaston House are supported by external staff and volunteers, many of whom are committed Christians and together from the House Team.

The vision of Nicholaston House is to create an atmosphere of love and prayer where people can find acceptance, peace, hope and healing through a Christian residential house. Nicholaston House facilitates different groups for conference and away days. The primary focus is as a centre for healing and restoration channelled through the various courses and retreats. In the words of a recent guest – it is a place of blessing, safety and sanctuary. All members of the team have a duty to assist with the fulfilment of the vision, focus and values.

We believe in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that we are made in God’s image called to do good works. As a team we commit to worship together on a daily basis, attend a local church on a regular basis, support one another through kindness, welcome visitors as Jesus would and take an active role in leading chapel times and other corporate worship times together as a team, with and without guests. From time to time, members of the residential community team may be called to pray for each other and/or guests visiting the House in accordance with our safeguarding policy. The residential community at Nicholaston House are considered to be an ‘intentional community’ as members of the team have chosen to become part of the community, receiving renumeration lower than those in the commercial sector. As such, community members receive an allowance that falls outside of the National Minimum Wage Regulations. The role is based on a 40 hour week and complies with Working Time Regulations. Shift patterns can vary and include early mornings to assist with preparing/serving breakfast, late evenings to cover evening meal times and lock up. Residential community members share night duty cover (sleeping/on-call) on a rota basis and also weekend House cover as and when the need arises. As a Christian Retreat and Conference Centre, the House is often in use 7 days a week. The House closes for Christmas week and this forms part of annual leave.

The role can be physically demanding and applicants will need to be able to undertake a number of physical tasks, including servicing bedrooms, cleaning, cooking and light maintenance work.

Key Conditions of Employment:

Residential ‘live-in’ general assistant - part of the Nicholaston House Community.

The role requires the successful applicant to reside at Nicholaston House, Christian Retreat and Conference Centre, Penmaen, Gower, Swansea, SA3 2HL

40 hours per week, generally working flexibly 5 days from 7 (with at least one weekend off a month, subject to the needs of the House)

Accommodation and on-site meals (in kind) are provided.

Ongoing training and support.

The allowance receivable for this ‘live in community role’ is £112/week.

Pro rata leave is 28 days per annum, including public holidays.

The probationary period is 6 months.

The successful candidate will be able to work within the Christian ethos of Swansea City Mission and Educational Trust.

Fixed-term contract until 31/12/18

Main Duties:

•To provide for guests and customers so that their needs are met in terms of comfort and care;

•Clean the House following procedures which are set down;

•Service the bedrooms;

•Cleaning and preparing all areas of the house except private rooms to a high standard;

•Washing, drying and ironing;

•Cooking food for small numbers as able;

•Laying tables;

•General waiting work within the House, the service and cleaning of dishes;

•Washing of utensils, crockery, cutlery, resulting from the service of meals;

•Preparing and serving teas and coffees;

•Hospitality to the guests and visitors as directed;

•To act as Shift Officer when required, including acting as night Shift Officer (sleeping/on-call basis) on a rota basis and providing weekend House cover as and when the need arises and on a rota basis;

•Decorating and odd jobs as necessary and able;

•To work as a member of the team and attend staff meetings;

•To engage in a flexible pattern of working and to undertake other duties as directed by Management;

•To actively participate within the residential ‘live in’ community team by leading/helping to lead, on a rota basis, corporate times of Christian worship, chapel times with guests and when the need arises, following prayer ministry training, support prayer with and for guests and other members of the team, including volunteers;

•As a member of the Nicholaston House residential ‘live in’ community, live within the principles of the Christian community (see ‘Community’ document);

•To work as a member of the team, supporting the charitable aims and objectives of the organisation and work within the ethos of Swansea City Mission and Educational Trust (i.e. Nicholaston House);

The recruitment process is two-way and we want potential applicants to feel a sense of calling to the role. This two-way assessment time will be followed by a formal interview, which will include a time of reviewing the assessment from the applicant perspective.

Appointments are subject to satisfactory references and other necessary employment checks relevant to the role. There is a 6 month probationary period attached to this role.
